Warwick University's victory was overshadowed as the impressive Rajan
Balasundaram and Deepak Chandrababu steal the show.
It was fabulous sunny day at the university ground in which Tara and Co won
the toss and decided to bat first. The Tara and Co batters were looking a little rusty
and this showed as the first few wickets fell quicker than the Sri Lankans against
Pakistan in the 20/20 final. It wasn't until the impressive Balasundaram came in to bat
that the ship steadied. Balasundarum got off to a flyer and really gave the university
fielders a lot of unwanted work to do in the coming overs, hitting the ball all over the
ground and even pulling off a spectacular reverse sweep. Luck was clearly on the
Balasundarum's side as he was dropped 3 times over his innings before reaching 50,
shortly after this great achievement he was caught. Tara and Co's innings came to a
conclusion at 104 with only Adam Tosh remaining not out with a spectacular score of
0. Now it was the bowlers chance to shine.
Warwick University started off by batting defensively and impressive fielding
from Tara and Co meant that there runs were kept to a minimum. With the university
batters seeming reluctant to depart and no wickets coming from the first 6 overs. With
a desperate need for wickets, captain David Quain unleashed the man that nobody
liked to bat against in practice Deepak Chandrababu. The captains decision to put in
Chandrababu paid off in his first over when he took his first wicket, a clinical
delivery which had the batsman bamboozled and hit the wicket. His second wicket
followed in his 2nd over after another brilliant delivery the batsman put the ball in the
air and it was superbly caught by captain Quain. A third wicket in his third over with
a superb one handed catch by David Shield. He finished off taking 3 wickets off 8
overs for 25 runs. There was good fielding on all around, Daniel Orr almost caught a
stunning strike with a spectacular dive. Also Bowling well was Vinod Kumar who
took a tremendous wicket. Eventually the university team reached their target of 105
which ended a brilliant fielding effort from all of the Tara and Co team.
