Warwick School Teachers v Tara and Co
Tuesday 2nd July 2009

Teachers given a lesson by Tara and Co

It was a slightly changed Tara and Co line up for the match, which saw the addition of
three new players, Gary Hammersley, Ash and Pranay after a injury to star fielder Adam
Tosh and absences from two other key plays,  Rajan Balasundaram and Darren Tosh.

In a game which saw father and son go head to head for the first time, Captain David
Quain lost the toss and the Teachers decided to bat. First up to bowl was Taz and he was as good as ever, delivering some thunderous deliveries and it wasn't long before he took his first wicket with a delivery which smashed the bales off the top of the stumps. Next into bowl was Nik Kalia and after a nervous first few balls, settled into his stride well and took a wicket in his second over. As the overs went by, the Teachers got more confident with every ball after hitting a number of boundary's and their score was going up at a nice rate. It wasn't long after some excellent batting that one of the teachers reached 30, this meant he had to retire as the rules for the match were batters retired at 30. New addition to the team Gary Hammersley was bowling well, and was unlucky that the batter he was bowling at had a hit and hope method and it seemed to be working quite well, as a few edges went for four. Another bowler who didn't seem to be having much luck was Ash, who struggled to find his line and length at the start of his over and gave only a few wides away after some excellent keeping by Taz, who had been unlucky not to stump someone in earlier overs. On his second from last ball of the over Ash finally had some luck when his delivery was hit high in the air and was caught by the safe hands of David Shield. Newcomer Pranay came in to bowl and got his aim in very quickly, some powerful deliveries proved to hot for the Teachers bats and on the fourth ball of the over he took a great wicket. Deepak Chandrababu or Mendez as his team mates know him was put into bowl the opposite end to Pranay, and as usual his bowling style was causing the Teachers problems. In his second over after some quick fielding by Shield, Chandrababu stumped a distraught batsman who had been ran out by his colleague. Over the next few overs another two wickets wickets fell after some tremendous bowling by Pranay who took two wickets in two balls. This brought on the batter that fielder David Shield had been waiting for, his father. Shield Jnr came into bowl when Shield Snr came onto strike, after some light banter between the two over the first ball bowled, Shield delivered a ball which was struck into the air and towards Vinod Kumar, Kumar did everything right, even catch the ball, only for a few seconds though as it slipped back out of his hands to save Shield Snr much banter and embarrassment for years to come. After he was dropped Shield Snr went on to score 16 before Kumar sought his revenge by bowling a ball at him which he hit in the air and was caught by the eager hands of Nik Kalia. With one over Varun came into bowl, one over was all he needed as he dispatched the final two batsman with ease, one of these wickets came with the help of Saahil Kalia, who took a tremendous catch.

With the Teachers finishing on a impressive 156, Tara and Co had their work cut out for them. David Quain and Taz went out to bat first and as usual Taz didn't take long to make a impression, hitting a few fours and a monstrous six before a audacious attempt at reaching the longest boundary was caught and he departed having scored 20. Captain Quain on the other hand started by playing in a much more conservative way scoring a number of singles before hitting a few beautifully struck fours. Quain's new strike partner Ash also got in on the action quickly scoring 30 having played some great shots. With the new maths building looking increasingly vulnerable from four and six attempts, the chase was on. Quain retired having scored 31 having scored some fantastic runs. Nik Kalia, who had came into bat for the retired Ash was batting well, playing some nice shots. The Tara and Co batters needed over 70 runs and needed a boost from somewhere, this boost came in the unlikely form of Warwick School Teacher Steve, who gave away 23 runs(mostly wides!) before bowling Varun for a golden duck in his very last and only straight ball. Next in to bat was the younger brother of Nik Kalia, Saahil, and it was them who brought the Tara and Co's score to a victorious 157 with 3 overs remaining, Nik scoring 22 and Sahil 13.
